You may enrol as absent only for the first academic year only due to a legal reason, for example military service in Finland according to the Conscription Act or maternity, paternity or parental leave or an illness, which prevents you from beginning the studies (Act 932/2014). If you don't have a legal reason, you must start studies enrolled as present. When enrolled as present, the study time starts running although you would not complete any studies.
