Student experiences of Degree Programme in Tourism and Event Management
From a business tourism professional to a social media expert
"Right now I am working as community manager at VR (government-owned railway company in Finland). My responsibility is to develop customer service in VR's social media channels, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Our team also handles our website's chat-contacts. Before that, I worked with similar assignments on operative level at Tallink-Silja for 3 years.
I chose to study Degree Programme in Tourism and Event Management, because I was interested in working with international assignments. Studying in English opened up broader opportunities. Business tourism studies are versatile – even though I studied tourism, I ended up working as a social media expert.
I really enjoyed my studies and student life in Porvoo. Haaga-Helia is an international, supportive and diverse. It gave me a great base for building my professional career. In addition I gained a great international group of friends and an international network of professionals."

"After graduating from high-school in Hungary, I was looking at several options in Finland where I could continue my education. My choice to study at Haaga-Helia Porvoo Campus just turned out to be an excellent one. Only now that I have completed the degree program in tourism, I can see the real value that the school provided for me.
As we had real life projects nearly every semester, I gained hands on experience in the field of tourism, events management and beyond. Working on these projects in international teams helped me not only to become a better team player, but also to develop a cross-cultural mindset. Often, I had the impression that I am working and learning new things at the same time. In fact, by the end of my studies I was able to extend my CV, making it appealing enough for companies looking for fresh graduates. I had no difficulties in finding a work-placement and turning it into a full time job. Now I am working as a Production and Marketing Specialist at TEG The Events Group in Budapest, a leading B2B event management company in Budapest.
However, keeping all the above in mind, the biggest advantage that I gained from studying in Haaga-Helia Porvoo Campus is all the amazing people I met. Both the teachers and my peers made my studies an unforgettable journey. I warmly recommend the school to all of those that are seeking knowledge and experience in a pleasant environment."

“With passion towards travelling and tourism I chose to study in the Degree Programme in Tourism at Haaga-Helia Porvoo campus. That choice shaped my future in many ways. This programme with its real-life case studies and projects gave me the knowledge I needed to start my career in tourism. Wether it was classroom studying on newest trends in event management, creating a business development plan for a local café in Porvoo or travelling to one of the biggest travel fairs in Berlin, they all made me confident and ready for real business from day one.
During my degree with Haaga-Helia I was also able to conduct exchange studies and internship in Malta, which gave me a better understanding of working in international environments, and from which I additionally gained a great international network.
After working at a hotel in Bristol, in Event Management in Malta and in Sales and Marketing in Helsinki, I today work for a global company called EF Education First as an Operations Manager in Oxford, United Kingdom.“
