On video Maria Cervantes shares her career story.
Having lived in London my whole life and worked in luxury hotels for the previous 6 years, I chose to apply only to the Hospitality Management Degree Program at the Haaga Campus of Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. My main reasons were to receive a hospitality degree from a ‘Leading Hotel School of the World’ so that I can progress to higher management in the hospitality industry globally, to experience living in Finland as I am a Finnish Londoner as both my parents are Finnish whom lived in London before I was born and it was considerably more affordable to study in Finland than in the UK.
I highly recommend that all students draw from the university’s best resource, the people. Absorbing knowledge from the highly experienced teachers to ‘networking’ with all your fellow students (including from all other classes) whom will be your hospitality colleagues after you graduate. It is invaluable having friends in many hotel, restaurant and tourism brands in the future.
A great way of getting to know other students is being a peer tutor, which I was twice. Be proactive and help your fellow students. You have chosen a career in hospitality after all!

My attitude when I joined Haaga Helia was to get the most out of the degree programme from the start to the finishing line. I had no idea where this would take me in my career but I jumped into the degree with passion from day one. On my 1st day at Haaga Helia I met my classmates, but little did I realise that early on in my degree that this one particular classmate of mine would become my business partner and together we would start building a potential franchise. With all the varied subjects and of course working simultaneously alongside the studies it is easy to find your area in which you wish to expand in. We joined Startup School, which is a Haaga Helia initiative for beginners in entrepreneurism, from there we were introduced to our mentor at Haaga Campus who encouraged us and helped us begin the groundwork of our company whilst at school leaving it to be pursued full-time after graduation. The more that you put into your life at Haaga Helia, the more you will get out of it and the networking opportunities are exceptional - if you grab them! Who would have thought though you can meet your future business partner in a classroom.
